Energy & DECOM Projects

Conventional Island, Hinkley Point C

Hinkley Point ‘C’ in Somerset is a twin EPR nuclear power station which will generate almost 3200MW. The station is being constructed by NNB Gen Co., a joint venture between EDF Energy and CGN of China.

Following completion of the Early Contract Involvement (ECI) design phase the Exyte Hargreaves team is now under full contract with NNB Gen Co to complete the design, procurement / manufacture, delivery, installation and pre-commissioning of the HVAC systems across five areas of the power station. The five systems include key buildings on the site such as the turbine halls and electrical buildings.

We cover both mechanical and electrical disciplines within our design team and manage critical sub-contractors as part of our scope. Key sub-systems include:

  • VRF Air Conditioning
  • Plant & equipment – e.g. Chillers / AHUs
  • PLC based Control System
  • Ventilation ductwork & piping.

Part of the HVAC system is safety classified which brings additional scrutiny to our design and supply but is part of our ‘nuclear’ pedigree. Our delivery strategy will seek to maximise the amount of Off Site Assembly where possible to increase site productivity. This contract is scheduled to complete in 2024.

Keadby 2 Power Station

The Keadby 2 project is an 840MW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant. It is expected to be one of the cleanest and most efficient gas-fired power stations in Europe and will generate power through a natural gas-fired CCGT with an output of up to 910MWe. The main components of the power station will be an SGT5-9000HL gas turbine unit, a steam turbine unit, one heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and ancillary equipment.

Scope of work is the detailed Engineer, Procure & Construct (EPC) methodology incorporates the use of Exyte Hargreaves Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) Offsite Assembly Facility to supply a modularised plant room, housing the Low Pressure Hot Water (LPHW) heating system and Building Management System (BMS):

  • Engineering, Procurement & Construction Contract.
  • Contractor Design Portions for specialised elements
  • Smoke Control System
  • Natural ventilation system
  • Intake units (Silencer + Motorized dampers
  • Recirculation Fan Systems
  • Building Management Systems
  • LPHW heating system
  • Electrical heating systems in remote buildings

Once complete, Keadby2 Power Station will generate 840MW of reliable energy enough to power 840,000 homes.

Chernobyl Safe Containment Arch

Established as a response to the deteriorating sarcophagus hastily built to contain the aftermath of the world‘s worst nuclear accident, the Safe Containment Arch is the result of a collaboration of two global construction giants (Bouygues & Vinci) backed by 27 nations under the EBRD.

Exyte Hargreaves provided seismically qualified HVAC designs systems for the containment arch and associated auxiliary buildings. This included all of the seismic supports. The works involved delivery in a multi national environment to various different standards including the Russian GOST standards.

Our scope of work included:

  • Seismic design and design studies of existing systems.
  • Engineering documentation and quality assurance.
  • Procurement & manufacture of HVAC systems, equipment and seismic supports.
  • On site supervision support during installation within the controlled zone.

We successfully overcame logistical and construction challenges to deliver this project package.

Harwell ILW Store

The Magnox Harwell site, near Oxford, was one of the founding sites of the UK’s nuclear energy industry. Over the course of several decades radioactive waste was produced and this store is the interim location prior to final disposal.

Exyte Hargreaves provided the complete HVAC, Fire and Security systems for this facility as a Tier 2 contractor for the main civil constructor. Our scope of work started with Mechanical & Electrical design through to commissioning using specialist sub-contractors where required.

Evaporator D

Evaporator D (Evap D) is a additional facility to increase the current existing capacity required for the evaporation (condensing) and storage of highly active effluents produced from existing reprocessing operations at Sellafield. As Evaporator C had outlived its shelf life, the delivery of this project was essential to ensure safe nuclear reprocessing of highly active liquor.

Project BEPPS & DIFF, Sellafield

The Box Encapsulation Project Product Store Direct Import Facility (BEPPS DIF) is a new build necessary to help treat the legacy waste streams from the Pile Fuel Cladding Silo (PFCS).

The overall scope includes complex High Integrity Containment systems which filter contaminated air to ensure the safety of those within the facility and surrounding areas.

The scope included the selection and procurement of all plant & equipment ranging from HEPA filter banks to concrete liners which transfer air through a very thick concrete slab the plant & equipment consisted of 11 off air handling units, 15 fans, 2 extract cabinets with associated pipe work manufactured and installed by Exyte Hargreaves along with 35 runs of Swagelok pipe work to facilitate the DOP system which Indicates when the filter media need changed.
