Protecting the World's Environment
For the past 60 years, nuclear energy has powered businesses, homes and transport (rail) with reliable, low carbon energy and will continue to play an increasing role in helping the UK achieve its net zero goals. The shift to clean, secure energy not only requires new build energy generation but also addressing the challenge of restoring the environment to a safe, natural state at the end of a facility’s lifecycle.

For decades Exyte Hargreaves have been supporting our clients in transforming contaminated, radioactive sites to safe, restored areas where local communities and the environment can thrive. We deliver and upgrade complete HVAC systems to create safe, controlled environments to facilitate nuclear decommissioning projects that protect the worlds environment from nuclear radiation and waste. Our innovative, high integrity systems filter and de-contaminate the atmosphere inside facilities turning the most hazardous facilities into safe spaces so people can safely carry out decommissioning work.
Our expertise in integrated engineering solutions for controlled environments includes the design, procurement, manufacture, installation and commissioning of HVAC systems. Combined with the wealth of experience we have in the nuclear sector, we have an unrivalled understanding of the exacting standards and requirements of the industry with a focus on health, safety and quality.
In the UK, we have built a reputable brand across the NDA estate supporting clients such as Magnox and Sellafield in the delivery of a multitude of decommissioning projects that safely process nuclear waste, reduce radioactivity to a safe level and restore sites to a safe state.
Our experience in nuclear waste management and decommissioning spans all the way back to the Site Ion Exchange Effluent Plant (SIXEP) on Sellafield in the 1980’s, a facility that removes radioactivity from various effluent streams. Over the last 40 years, we’ve maintained a continuous presence at Sellafield supporting in the delivery of projects such as THORP, SMP, SAV, WAGR, Evaporator D and most recently, BEP and BEPPS/DIF.
We have also helped to protect and regenerate the environment in decommissioning projects at Calder Hall, Hunterston A, Bradwell and Dounreay and supported the decommissioning waste management strategy with projects such as Harwell ILW Store where we provided the complete HVAC, fire and security systems.
Internationally, we’ve played a key role in the highest profile decommissioning project in the world; Chernobyl Safe Containment Arch where we provided seismically qualified HVAC systems for the containment arch and associated auxiliary buildings. An extraordinary project that has made the highly radioactive site safe for future generations.
Today, we continue to deliver innovative solutions providing better environments for our clients to safely and effectively process radioactive waste and material to decontaminate redundant nuclear facilities at the end of their lifecycle as we strive towards creating regenerated environments and a sustainable future.
